Today is Friday 7 August 2026 and Easter Sunday is Sunday 28 March 2027. Subtracting one calendar date from the other gives 233 days.

That count treats both as calendar dates and does not count today, which is what almost everyone means by "days until". Counting today as well gives 234. Measuring the clock time still to run gives 232 days plus the hours on the readout, because part of today has already gone.

All three are correct answers to slightly different questions, and it is exactly why pages ranking for this search return numbers that differ by one or two. The readout names the basis it used and the control under it changes both.

Easter is computed, not fixed. It is the first Sunday after the first ecclesiastical full moon on or after 21 March.

Why Easter moves

Easter is the only major date in the western calendar that is set by the Moon.

The rule is that Easter Sunday is the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after 21 March.

Three moving parts, and each does something. 21 March fixes the earliest the window can open. The full moon moves within that window, because the lunar month is about twenty-nine and a half days and does not divide into the solar year. The Sunday then pushes the date forward by up to six more days.

Put together, Easter can fall anywhere between 22 March and 25 April, a five week range. This year it lands on 28 March 2027.

One detail is the source of most arguments about this: the church does not use the actual astronomical moon. It uses an ecclesiastical full moon, taken from a table that approximates the lunar cycle. The two are usually the same day and occasionally are not. The rule is a calendar rule, not an observation.

Why there are two Easters

Orthodox churches apply the same rule on the Julian calendar and with a different lunar table. The Julian calendar now runs thirteen days behind the Gregorian one, and that gap is derived here rather than hard-coded, because it becomes fourteen days in 2100.

This year the gap is 35 days, so Orthodox Pascha falls on 2 May 2027. The gap is never fixed: it is nothing in some years and as much as five weeks in others.

The dates here are computed with the anonymous Gregorian computus for the western date and Meeus’s Julian algorithm for the Orthodox one, so they stay correct for any year you ask for rather than running out at the end of a table.

Everything that moves with Easter

Once Easter is fixed, a whole season follows from it by simple offsets. Ash Wednesday is forty-six days before, Palm Sunday seven days before, Good Friday two days before, Ascension thirty-nine days after and Pentecost forty-nine days after.

That is why the spring school holidays, the bank holidays and the whole spring term shift from one year to the next. In the United Kingdom and Ireland, Mothering Sunday moves too: it is three weeks before Easter, which puts it on Sunday 7 March 2027 this year.

How this date is set

Easter Sunday is the first Sunday following the first ecclesiastical full moon that falls on or after 21 March. The ecclesiastical full moon is a value from a table, not an observation, so it can differ from the astronomical full moon by a day or two. The rule confines Easter to a 35-day window between 22 March and 25 April.

Questions

How many days until Easter?

233 days, counting to midnight at the start of Sunday 28 March 2027 in the time zone shown on the readout.

Why is Easter early or late in a given year?

Because the paschal full moon moves. Easter is the first Sunday after the first ecclesiastical full moon on or after 21 March, so an early full moon gives an early Easter. The date can never fall before 22 March or after 25 April.

Why is Orthodox Easter on a different date?

Orthodox churches apply the same rule using the Julian calendar, which now runs thirteen days behind the Gregorian one, and a different lunar table. This year the two are 35 days apart.

What are the Easter dates for the next few years?

They are in the table below, alongside the Orthodox date and the gap between the two. Both are computed from the rule rather than looked up, so the table does not run out.
